“Are you awake, LA?” Deb Never yells as she enters the stage of the sold out Moroccan Lounge, opening with one of her most popular tracks, “Swimming.” The LA based singer released her debut EP, House on Wheels earlier this year, creating a new wave of punk meets rap aesthetic. Originally from Spokane, the thirteen-minute project of 5 tracks not only cemented her Washington State affinity for grunge and punk, but introduced a new sound of alt emo dreaminess. With her idiosyncratic blend of daydream melodies and lo-fi hip-hop, Never creates her genre bending tracks that have amassed close to 300,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Keep in mind that she only has less than 10 released songs and has already been named one of the industry’s emerging artists.
Her headlining show, supported by Jean Dawson filled the stage room to capacity and with good reason. Tommy Genesis made a guest appearance for the Never’s remix she is featured on, “Same.” Never followed their girl powered performance with her beloved hook on BROCKHAMPTON’s track “No Halo,” from their latest album GINGER. After finishing supporting Dominic Fike on his North American “Rain or Shine Tour” and laying out tracks for BROCKHAMPTON, Deb Never has been busy creating new music. She performed a compellingly delicate song that she penned only a week ago called, “Supernova Girl.” The wispy melodies of this track takes a more intimate route with just her guitar and raw vocals, creating a new vulnerability that is reminiscent of her “DKWYWFM Demo.” The second unreleased song she performed is the captivating and fun “Stone Cold Steve Austin,” shouting out Kennybeats at the end.
Her closer consisted of the song that placed her on everyone’s radar, “Ugly,” with an encore performance of an unreleased song named “Farewell.” She says, “You better cry and dance to this one,” as her fingers start flittering the melody everyone has been waiting for. Deb Never’s breakout track, “Ugly” depicts the stagnation of a convenient relationship and turned it into last summer’s anthem. Her adored single had the crowd quietly solemn one second to passionately shoving the next, mastering the balance between vulnerable lyrics and stuttering beats that had her listeners moshing with tears.
