Left tackle Tyron Smith and center Travis Frederick were both called for tripping in Sunday’s loss. The call on Frederick wiped out a first down in the final two minutes.
The Cowboys turned the ball over on downs two plays later.
“We’re not really allowed to talk about the calls,’’ said Frederick, who was unable to seek out the official to get an explanation. “I think we’ll just leave it at that.’’
The players and head coach Jason Garrett were clearly exasperated by the calls, but bit their tongues for the most part. Garrett deflected the first question he received about the tripping calls, then conceded on the follow-up that, “I’ve never seen that before.’’
What did owner Jerry Jones think?
“I don’t want to go there,’’ he said.

Smith’s long day: Smith was penalized for holding, a false start and tripping.
The tripping calls had the Cowboys up in arms because they were penalized twice for it. Smith was flagged for tripping in the first quarter and later center Travis Frederick was penalized for it in the fourth quarter.
"I can do better," Smith said of the penalties. "I can't have three penalties like that. That's on me. I got to do better."
The tripping call was a questionable call considering Smith was backing up in pass protection when Patriots defensive end Shilique Calhoun and outside linebacker Dont'a Hightower executed a twist. Hightower fell in Smith's leg as the left tackle was backing up.
“All we can do is do our job and that’s the call they made and we have to deal with it,” he said. “We’re moving around and things happen, that’s basically what it is.”

Weather conditions: The temperature was 38 degrees at kickoff with a wind chill of 29 degrees. The winds were gusting up to 16 miles per hour and most of the game was played in a driving rain.
The Cowboys didn’t blame the weather for their 13-9 loss. All mentioned the New England defense first before mentioning the weather. But it was a factor.
“I think anywhere on the field it was hard,’’ Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. “The ball’s wet, your hand’s wet, the field was a little slick and the wind was a factor.
“When you call them all up together, it just made it very challenging.’’

Heath banged up: Jeff Heath was in pain Sunday.
That didn’t limit how he played.
The Cowboys safety returned to the lineup Sunday after missing one game to rest two injured shoulders. In the third quarter, he grabbed his right one in discomfort. Later in the third, he visibly favored his left after using the shoulder to break up a deep third-down pass, thwarting what likely would have been a New England Patriots scoring drive.
Heath briefly exited after aggravating his right shoulder.
Darian Thompson replaced him for one defensive snap, but Heath returned.
“When I’m out there, I’m just going to play like I’m not limited at all,” Heath said. “I want to be out there. … I was able to make it through the game.”

Good performance, but…: The Patriots’ running backs were held to season lows in the passing game with three catches for 8 yards. Defensive end Robert Quinn recorded a sack to boost his season total to 9 1/2 in nine games. Of the 13 points allowed, a blocked punt led to one touchdown and an interception produced a field goal.
All in all, the Cowboys’ defense was excellent Sunday.
But there was an exception.
“We just got to find a way to take the ball away,” Heath said. “I think that’s three games in a row where we haven’t taken the ball away. When you’re playing a good team on the road, we give them the ball in the red zone with a blocked punt, and then they get an interception. We have to make those plays that put the balance of the game in our direction. …
“Obviously, I have to watch the film. I think we played solid but just not good enough in terms of taking the ball away.”

Strong night: Jourdan Lewis rose to the challenge.
The Cowboys’ nickel cornerback had a strong outing Sunday against Patriots slot receiver Julian Edelman. He kept tight coverage and largely kept the Pro Bowler in check aside from a 20-yard completion that converted a third-and-20 in the fourth quarter.
Dallas’ defensive line then helped force a punt.
That effort involved a Michael Bennett run stuff for a 1-yard loss and a third-down Maliek Collins sack.
“You look forward to stuff like that,” Lewis said of the matchup. “My number was called. I fought the best I could.”
Edelman finished with eight catches on 12 targets for 93 yards.

Run game picks it up but passing game struggles: You could blame the weather but the Cowboys passing game, a strength this season, struggled. The running attack picked it up as Ezekiel Elliott rushed 21 times for 86 yards in the loss. In the previous two games, Elliott averaged just 46 yards on 18 carries.
The Cowboys were in need of both the run and pass Sunday.
"Terrible weather today, the fact that we threw the ball as well as we could today, I would say the passing struggled and sometimes when I got the ball on a handoff, the ball was moving around in my arms. I think you just got to find a way to win that game."
-- Calvin Watkins
Cowboys without linebackers coach: Cowboys linebackers coach Ben Bloom missed Sunday’s game with the flu and a personal issue. It’s the first time this season an assistant coach missed a game. Cowboys defensive assistant/linebackers coach Ken Amato took over for Bloom.

Michael Bennett hugs Bill Belichick: Michael Bennett was traded from the Patriots to the Cowboys in late October. Part of the reason was scheme fit and an argument Bennett had with defensive line coach Bret Bielema leading to a one-game suspension. Before the game, Bennett hugged Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
Bennett finished with two tackles and two tackles for loss.
