Sadness is woven into the music of each generation, often spawning new styles dedicated to feelings of yearning, angst, and outright depression. Some artists of the present moment—such as the singer-songwriter Deb Never, who performs at Elsewhere on Dec. 6—have turned the mood into a genre itself, synthesizing a multitude of sounds to articulate those sensations. Raised between Spokane and Seattle, Deb Never owes as much to the grunge born in that region as she does to the emo corners of the Internet. (One might say that her star-boosting collaboration with BROCKHAMPTON, on the band’s moody single “No Halo,” seemed almost predestined.) Her début EP, “House on Wheels,” marries rolling 808s and whining guitar riffs to lyrics that read like post-breakup journal entries; it’s a harmonious union that doubles as an affirmation of her commitment to both boundary-free creation and emotional purgatory.
