'There will never be another Curly': Locals honor city employee with a Christmas tree at the spot he died - WYMT News

LESLIE COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Two months ago, Delbert "Curly" Whitehead was killed in a car accident on the Hal Rogers Parkway.

"He was a friend to everybody. If anybody had a problem or needed anything fixed Curly would help them and hardly ever charged anybody anything unless they just forced money on him. He really tried to help people," said Hyden Mayor Carol Joseph. "He was a good person."

Now, people in Leslie County have decorated a tree on the side of the road at the spot he was killed to honor him.

"That tree was kind of like Curly. It was out by itself minding its own business he liked to be by himself too," said Joseph.

He worked for the City of Hyden for nearly 31 years, and he especially loved decorating for Christmas.

"He never griped never complained no matter where we wanted to put a bow or anything. The only thing he asked is we didn't put lights and bows on him and Jeffery," said Joseph.

This year, city employees said it was hard to be in the holiday spirit during the long hours they spent decorating.

"Every wreath, every bow everything we strung up we thought of him and we're sad even though it's beautiful and everybody says it looks like a Hallmark village and I agree with them. We definitely felt his loss this year at Christmas," said Joseph.

Now, when they look at the lights they think of him.

"We love him and miss him. There will never be another Curly," said Joseph.

Whitehead's passion was working at the water treatment facility. They are going to dedicate the facility to him with a plaque honoring his service.
